Veritas Medicine, a leading information technology provider for protocol assessment and patient recruitment in clinical trials, received the best in show award at this year's Health Care Research and Innovations Congress (HCRIC) in Washington, DC. Recognized as the country's premier peer-reviewed medical technology program, HCRIC also honored Veritas Medicine with a first place award for best innovation in patient recruitment.
"Clearly the HCRIC best in show winner, Veritas Medicine, has created a solution that addresses the greatest challenge for healthcare research," says Wendy Borrow Johnson, co-chair of the awards program; President, Healthy Living Channel; and Senior Vice President of The Networks Group, Turner Media Group, Inc. "The recruitment process here is a technology solution which helps to identify qualified patients for clinical research studies and also creates databases of patients for future studies."
According to a variety of healthcare industry experts, patient recruitment accounts for the single largest delay in the drug development process. To address this problem, pharmaceutical companies spend more than a half of a billion dollars every year reaching out to patients and identifying physician investigators with relevant patient populations.
"This award is extremely important to our employees who have worked so diligently to solve complex patient recruitment problems for our valued clients," says, Joseph C. Avellone, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Veritas Medicine. "The development of our patient recruitment solution required a combination of clinical and technical innovations," continued Dr. Avellone. "We are particularly lucky to be in the Boston-area where information technology expertise can so readily be joined with the brightest biomedical talent."
Innovation and Product Delivery
According to Dr. Avellone, the Veritas Medicine Recruitment System enables individual pharmaceutical companies to dramatically improve their patient recruitment results. The Recruitment System screens patients against multiple currently enrolling clinical trials and also notifies interested patients about new research studies as they begin enrolling.
"The single largest clinical innovation was the development of a proprietary algorithm-driven mechanism that enables patients to enter their health information into simple profile forms and then matches that data to the complicated eligibility criteria of clinical trial protocols," says Dr. Avellone. "The system operates with a very high level of security to bring this kind of sensitive information together. Finally, due to the regulated nature of clinical research, we work closely with Institutional Review Boards, regulatory and legal departments of pharmaceutical companies, and various government entities to ensure that our solutions can be implemented."
About the HCRIC Awards:
The HCRIC awards were designed to recognize those companies, non-profits, foundations, organizations, government agencies and academic entities for their excellence and advancement in implementing innovative technology to expedite the delivery of bench to bedside and improve patient care. A panel of 14 senior-level healthcare judges representing academia, industry, and non-profit organizations carefully reviewed the many submitted applications for criteria such as innovation, return on investment, and benefit to patients and society. In addition to Veritas Medicine, other award winners were Siemens Medical Solutions and Mitretek Systems, Inc.
