ViaCell, Inc. Appoints Vaughn M. Kailian as Chairman of the Board of Directors
01/13/2004
ViaCell, Inc., a premier cellular therapy company, announced today the appointment of Vaughn M. Kailian as chairman of its board of directors. Mr. Kailian is vice chairperson of the board of directors of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: MLNM) and was previously the head of Millennium’s commercial organization. Prior to this, he served as CEO, president and director of COR Therapeutics, Inc.

“ViaCell is extremely fortunate to have Mr. Kailian serve as its chairman,” said Marc Beer, CEO of ViaCell. “Mr. Kailian brings extensive pharmaceutical and entrepreneurial expertise to our board. His critical decision-making, execution in all disciplines and focus on achieving goals helped make COR Therapeutics one of the most successful biotech companies. I look forward to working with Mr. Kailian to further build on ViaCell’s leadership position in cellular therapy.”

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work with Marc Beer and the board and management team at ViaCell,” said Vaughn Kailian. “Cell therapy has tremendous potential in many areas of medicine, and ViaCell has the people, capital and business model to make it a reality.”

In his capacities at Millennium, Mr. Kailian oversaw the integration of the COR Therapeutics commercial organization, expanded the cardiovascular sales effort and led the establishment of the Millennium commercial group, which successfully launched VELCADE less than four months after the NDA application was filed with the FDA. Previously, Mr. Kailian served as CEO, president and director of COR Therapeutics. He assumed the position of CEO shortly after COR was founded and took the company public in 1991. Mr. Kalian raised almost $1 billion in public market capital and led the merger with Millennium Pharmaceuticals in 2002. The acquisition, valued at $2 billion, was hailed as a blueprint for future consolidation in the biotech industry. During Mr. Kailian’s tenure, COR grew into a market leader in the commercialization of a breakthrough class of cardiovascular therapeutics known as GPIIb-IIIa inhibitors.

Prior to joining COR, Mr. Kailian served in various international and U.S. general management, marketing and sales positions at Marion Merrell Dow, Inc. and its predecessor companies. Among the positions held by Mr. Kailian were president and general manager, Merrell Dow USA; and corporate vice president of Global Commercial Development, Marion Merrell Dow, Inc.

Mr. Kailian earned his B.A. degree at Tufts University. He is a member of the board of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the California Healthcare Institute, and the Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also a director of NicOx, S.A.
